A new generation of efficient fishing vessels
Built on VARD's proven VARD 8 02 design, Havbryn is an advanced 80.4-metre stern trawler developed for efficient, responsible and future-oriented fishing operations.
Combining hybrid diesel-electric propulsion, advanced fish processing technology and innovative energy solutions, the vessel is designed to maximize catch quality, improve energy efficiency and provide excellent working conditions for the crew.
Delivered on time from Vard Brattvaag in September 2026, Havbryn represents a new chapter for Havbryn AS and demonstrates the strength of VARD's integrated shipbuilding capabilities.
01
The challenge
Havbryn AS, part of the family-owned Strand Rederi, sought to replace its existing fishing vessel with a modern stern trawler capable of meeting the evolving demands of the fishing industry.
The new vessel needed to combine efficient semi-pelagic and bottom-trawling operations with high catch quality, reduced fuel consumption and improved resource utilization.
Equally important were safe working conditions, crew comfort and reliable performance in demanding environments.
The ambition was to develop a future-ready fishing vessel that could deliver operational efficiency while supporting more sustainable fisheries.

02
What we did
Working closely with Havbryn AS, VARD designed and built a highly specialized stern trawler tailored to the owner's operational requirements.
Developed by Vard Design in Ålesund, the vessel combines a proven hull design with advanced technology for propulsion, energy management, fishing operations and onboard processing.
The 80.4-metre vessel features an ice-strengthened hull, hybrid diesel-electric propulsion and an advanced processing factory. An integrated energy management system enables energy recovery from the electric trawl winches, contributing to improved overall efficiency.
Crew welfare was also a key priority, with modern accommodation, comfortable cabins, spacious common areas and a dedicated gym.
The hull was constructed at Vard Braila in Romania before final outfitting, commissioning and delivery from Vard Brattvaag in Norway.
We are proud and delighted to put our new vessel into operation. We would like to thank VARD and its employees, whose expertise and ability to deliver have made us feel well looked after throughout an excellent process. The vessel was delivered on time, and the naming ceremony both marks the completion of the project and the beginning of a new era for us.
Astrid Strand, Chief Executive Officer of Havbryn AS.
Key contributors
Developed the VARD 8 02 stern trawler design, combining efficient hull performance, operational flexibility and advanced technology for modern fishing operations.
Delivered integrated SeaQ solutions, including the SeaQ Energy Storage System, SeaQ Microgrid, power management and SeaQ Bridge. The systems enable efficient energy distribution and recovery of power from the trawl winches, supporting lower fuel consumption and more efficient operations.
Supplied an advanced winch and crane package designed for safe and efficient deck handling in demanding conditions. The electric trawl winches regenerate energy during shooting and paying out wire, feeding power back into the vessel's energy storage system.
Delivered modern accommodation and interior solutions, together with HVAC-R and piping systems. The solutions combine functionality, quality and crew comfort to create an attractive working and living environment onboard.
