A passion for vessels shaped by early experiences

Growing up in Ecuador’s largest port city, Rosa was surrounded by ships and maritime life from an early age. With her parents working at the Navy base in Guayaquil, and family trips along the Guayas River, her fascination with vessels sparked. Initially drawn to architecture and mechanical systems, Rosa discovered naval architecture at age 15, which was a perfect blend of her interests.

Building expertise across borders

Rosa began her career at the Ecuadorian Navy’s shipyard, quickly advancing from engineer to assistant project manager. Her ambition to become a ship designer led her to pursue further education abroad. After earning a master’s degree in Structural Integrity at Brunel University in England, she returned to Ecuador before setting her sights on Scandinavia for advanced studies in marine technology. Accepted into the Nordic Master Program, Rosa studied at Chalmers University in Sweden and NTNU in Norway, focusing on structural design and hydrodynamics.

From participating in a bootcamp to full-time employment

In September 2023, Rosa attended a maritime bootcamp at NTNU in Ålesund, where she visited Vard Brattvaag and collaborated with other students on an industry challenge. The experience left a strong impression, which led to her applying for a position at VARD. By the beginning of 2024, Rosa had moved to Ålesund and joined the Structural department as an Engineer.

Balancing full-time work with completing her thesis on hydrostructure interaction for offshore wind turbines was demanding, yet rewarding. Rosa has a clear advice to anyone trying to figure out their career path:

- Choose a career that truly interests you. It makes busy times easier and brings more joy to your journey.

Her new life in Ålesund

Today, Rosa coordinates structural design for several vessels at different stages of production. She is still learning every single day, and the strong team spirit makes the journey even better. Through the Social program at VARD, she has met new people from different departments and locations. Outside of work, Rosa enjoys singing, going to concerts, and exploring Ålesund’s scenic beauty.

“I love the teamwork in my department and across VARD. From day one, people have been supportive and open. I feel motivated by the chance to help create efficient and sustainable solutions for the maritime industry. I also enjoy challenges because they help me grow and learn new things.”
