VARD proves that we are a leading shipbuilder and integrator of advanced defence vessels important for the strategic security of Norway.

Building the Jan Mayen class vessels presented unique challenges due to the strict requirements for Arctic operations. The vessels needed to ensure durability in extreme conditions, accommodate advanced technology, and meet demanding specifications for strength, stability, and environmental sustainability. Additionally, VARD had to manage the complexity of integrating numerous Norwegian suppliers while ensuring timely delivery and maintaining the highest quality standards.

VARD utilized its integrated value chain to build, equip and deliver the Jan Mayen class vessels. The hulls were constructed at Vard Shipyard Romania – Tulcea, while final outfitting and delivery took place at Vard Langsten in Norway. By leveraging Norwegian suppliers and adhering to the Navy’s specifications, VARD ensured the vessels were optimized for Arctic operations, featuring ice reinforcements, modern sensors, and environmentally friendly solutions. Close collaboration with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency and the Coast Guard ensured the vessels met all operational and strategic needs.

The three Jan Mayen class vessels were delivered on time, meeting all operational requirements and exceeding quality expectations. These advanced ships now serve as the backbone of Norway’s Coast Guard, providing enhanced capabilities in the High North, including extended endurance, helicopter support, and state-of-the-art technology. The project also contributed significantly to Norway’s maritime industry, fostering local expertise, value creation, and national security preparedness.
