Purpose-built CSOV delivered as planned 

Windward Athens, the first Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (CSOV) for Windward Offshore, has been delivered on time from Vard Brattvaag. The vessel marks an important milestone in our collaboration with the newly established ship owner and supports the rapid expansion of the offshore wind industry.

The challenge

Windward Offshore set out to enter the offshore wind service market with a modern fleet of advanced CSOVs. The challenge was to deliver a highly complex, next-generation CSOV, built for demanding offshore wind operations, while maintaining schedule and quality.

Delivered on time

VARD’s integrated value chain, spanning design, hull construction, outfitting, and commissioning, ensured the vessel was delivered according to schedule.

Future-ready

A purpose-built CSOV with hybrid propulsion prepared for future conversion to methanol, motion-compensated offshore systems, and advanced digital systems, enabling safe, efficient, and sustainable operations from day one.

Operational efficiency and comfort

High-comfort accommodation for up to 120 people and smart integrated systems support crew welfare, operational reliability, and seamless offshore wind service activities.

What we did

In close collaboration with Windward Offshore, we designed, equipped, and built a CSOV tailored to their operational needs. Delivered from Vard Brattvaag and based on the energy-efficient VARD 4 19 design, the vessel features motion-compensated gangway and crane systems, SeaQ integrated automation and energy management, high-comfort accommodation for 120 people, hybrid propulsion prepared for future conversion to methanol, and advanced digital systems, ready for safe, efficient, and sustainable offshore operations.

Key contributors

Vard Electro supplied the SeaQ integrated systems for energy management, automation, and control, ensuring efficient and safe operation.

Vard Interiors provided the HVAC-R and accommodation systems for up to 120 people, securing comfort and functionality onboard. Close coordination between design, production, and outfitting teams ensured seamless progress and on-schedule delivery.

Seaonics delivered the ECMC C25 3D Crane designed for offshore operations. It features a fully electrical controlled motion compensation system, ensuring smooth and precise movements even in challenging conditions.

Result

Windward Athens was successfully delivered on time in September 2025 and was ready to begin operations under charter to RWE Offshore Wind via North Star. The vessel offers excellent operability, energy efficiency, and is prepared for green methanol fuel, supporting the client’s sustainability ambitions.
